Die Spanheimer verliehen den Osterwitzern<br \/>\n1209 das Erbamt der Mundschenken.<br \/>\nDer letzte Schenk von Osterwitz wird 1475 bei einem t\u00fcrkeneinfall gefangen und stirbt in der Gefangenschaft ohne<br \/>\nErben.<br \/>\nHochosterwitz f\u00e4llt an Kaiser Friedrich III zur\u00fcck.<br \/>\n1541 verpf\u00e4ndet K\u00f6nig Ferdinand I. Osterwitz an den damaligen Landeshauptmann Christoph Khevenh\u00fcller. Nach dessen Tod erbt sein \u00e4ltester Sohn Hans V Khevenh\u00fcller dieses Pfandrecht, welches er durch seine Diplomatent\u00e4tigkeit nicht aus\u00fcben kann und somit 1571 seinem Vetter Georg Freiherr von Khevenh\u00fcller, ebenfalls Landeshauptmann von K\u00e4rnten verkauft. Unter seiner F\u00fchrung wird die Burg wegen der drohenden T\u00fcrkeneinf\u00e4lle ausgebaut, mit einer Wa\u001f enkammer ausger\u00fcstet und in den Jahren 1570 -1586, mit der bis heute bestehenden Wehranlage<br \/>\nmit 14 Tore versehen.<br \/>\nEin derartig vielseitig gesicherter Burgweg z\u00e4hlt nicht nur zu den gr\u00f6\u00dften Seltenheiten, sondern stellt ein Unikum im Burgenbau dar. Eine alte Urkunde verzeichnet die<br \/>\nNamen der einzelnen Tore. Seit dieser Zeit fanden keine wesentlichen baulichen Ver\u00e4nderungen statt. Die Burg ist bis zum heutigen Tag ununterbrochen im Besitz der Familie Khevenh\u00fcller. In einer Verf\u00fcgung des Bauherrn, Georg Khevenh\u00fcller, aus dem Jahre 1576, welche auf einer Marmortafel im Burghof zu lesen ist, wird das Verm\u00e4chtnis erlassen, es m\u00f6ge die Burg im Besitz der Nachkommen bleiben und diese f\u00fcr deren Erhaltung Sorge tragen.
